CU 18. Laparoscopic nephron - sparing partial nephrectomy for the treatment of T1 renal tumors: Report of 22 cases

Objective: To investigate the feasibility of retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephron-sparing partial nephrectomy for treating stage T1 renal tumors.

Methods: The clinical data of 22 cases (8 men and 14 women; mean age: 48 years) who had undergone retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephron-sparing partial nephrectomy for stage T1 renal tumors were retrospectively analyzed. Among them 1 case had bilateral renal tumor, and 1 case was unilateral double tumor foci; tumors were in left kidney in 13 patients and in right kidneys in 10 patients. The average diameter of tumor masses was 3.0 cm.

Results: All operations were completed successfully. The average operation duration was 135 min, the average renal artery occlusion time was 29 min, the average blood loss was 55 mL, and the average hospital stay was 10 days. No intraoperative suigical complication was noted, and only 1 case was present with leakage of urine. Intraoperative pathological margins were negative, and postoperative pathologies were as follows: 19 cases were renal cell carcinoma, 2 were multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma, 2 were renal oncocytoma, and 1 was chromophobe renal cell adenocarcinoma. Patients were followed up from 1 to 28 months (mean: 10 months), during which no local recurrence and distant metastasis was observed.

Conclusions: Laparoscopic nephron-sparing partial nephrectomy is safe and feasible for treating for T1 renal tumors. However, its long-term efficacy requires further investigation.
