CU 29. Treatment and prognosis of bilateral renal cell carcinoma: Report of 4 cases
Objective: To summarize our experiences in the diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of bilateral renal cell carcinoma (BRCC).
Methods: The clinical data of 4 BRCC patients were retrospectively analyzed. The mean tumor diameter was 4.5 cm (2.5-7 cm). Retroperitoneal laparoscopy was performed in all 4 BRCC patients. In one patient, one kidney was first treated with retroperitoneal laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (RLRN), and then the contralateral kidney with robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) 2 weeks later. In the remaining three cases, one kidney was firstly treated with RPN, and then the contralateral kidney with RLRN 2 weeks later.
Results: With the mean followed-up of 18 months (range, 3 to 45 months), no recurrence was observed in these 4 cases, and their total renal function was in good condition.
Conclusions: The principle for treating BRCC is to excise the tumor as far as possible and to maximize the preservation of total renal function. The RLRN combined with RPN is a safe and effective treatment of BRCC.
