CU 35. Sewing needle broke through urinary bladder

Bladder foreign body is an interesting topic in urological emergency (1,2). Here we report a 63-year-old male patient with sewing needle in bladder. He presented with lower abdominal pain and gross hematuria during miction. A physical examination is unremarkable. A KUB film revealed a needle-like radiopaque shadow in the bladder region. A CT scan showed the needle-like object poked through left lateral wall of bladder. Fortunately, it didn't prick into adjacent intestine or vessels. The patient didn't aware how it was introduces into the body.

Under general anesthesia, rigid cystoscope was introduced into the bladder. A slight rusty sewing needle was found at the left lateral wall of bladder. The needle broke through the bladder wall. At the filling phage, it was transversally positioned with inflammatory follicular around it. The bladder was halfdrained to let the inner part be away from the bladder wall and toward bladder neck direction. The needle end was grasped with foreign forceps and pulled into the sheath. By withdrawing the cystoscope, the needle was taken out at the same time. A 16 Fr Folley's catheter was left and removed one day after. The patient was discharged on the second day after surgery.
