PE 02. Survey on sexual life among some Changsha residents
Objective: To investigate the status and quality of the sexual life among the general citizens in Changsha, capital city of Hunan Province in central China, to provide evidence for prevention and treatment of sexual disorders and optimization of family ties.
Methods: An unselected group of outpatient participants were asked to provide information about the first sexual experience, sexual partners, age at marriage and pre- and post-marital sex lives, including time of foreplay, position, frequency, duration and satisfaction of sex activities, via one-on-one interviews with informed consent.
Results: Of the 305 participants, there were 159 men and 149 women aged 19 to 70 years with an average of 29.48 years. The first sexual intercourse was at 16 years old the earliest and 26 the latest in men, or 13 the earliest and 26 the latest in women. Overall, 38.7% participants did not have foreplay before sexual activities, 83.9% (256/305) adopted the missionary position, and 21.3% (65/305) have multiple sexual partners at different times and 2.8% (39/305) had two or more sexual partners simultaneously. One to two times of sex per week was seen in most (76%, 232/305) participants, while 11% (34/305) had sex one or more times every day and 13% (40/305) had sex one or two times every month. A duration of 3 to 30 minutes was seen in 58.7% (179/305) cases, of which 79.8% (143/179) had their sexual activities for 5 to 7 minutes. Up to 34.6% (55/159) men were not satisfied with their sexual lives, including 8.0% (13/159) with premature ejaculation, 1.3% (2/159) due to coition without ejaculation, and 12% (19/159) with low libido or weak erections. Only 42.2% (63/146) women were satisfied, whereas more than half of them reported no pleasure in sexual intercourse. Only 2.0% (3/146 ) women could achieve two or more orgasms with a satisfaction of 100%. After giving birth, 1.4% (2/146) participants did not have orgasm and had to satisfy themselves with a dildo or through masturbation.
Conclusions: In view of the various sex-related problems of the general public, public education and guidance are needed to facilitate a harmonious family.
