Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of retrolaparoscopic partial nephrectomy in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma.

Methods: Retroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomy was performed in 11 patients with small renal cell carcinoma. The mean tumor diameter was 3.2 cm (range, 2.0-4.5 cm). The operation duration, postoperative hospital stay, blood loss, and postoperative complications were observed.

Results: Retroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomy was successfully performed in all 11 patients. The mean operation duration was 140 min (range, 120-160 min). The mean blood loss was 120 mL (range, 50-250 mL).The mean renal artery blood flow occlusion time was 30 min (range, 25-45 min). The mean postoperative hospitalization stay was 6 d (range, 5-7 d). The surgical margin was negative in all patients. Followed-up (mean: 8 months; range, 3 to 12 months) showed no recurrence or functional loss of the remaining kidney.

Conclusions: With less trauma and bleeding, shorter postoperative hospital stay, and quicker recovery, petroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomy is a safe and effective procedure for small renal cell carcinoma. It can be an alternative to open surgery.
