Preface on current topics in men’s health
It is our pleasure to bring to you this edition of Translational Andrology and Urology (TAU) that focuses on men’s health. These articles are meant to give the reader an overview of many of the controversies and salient topics in the field.
Over the preceding years there has been an increased focus on men’s health. New treatments and provocative studies are at the forefront of this renaissance. All of this study and attention has focused the narrative on the specific medical problems that men face.
We set out to present a current perspective and synopsis of just some of the interesting and controversial topics. Improvements in treatment of erectile dysfunction have permeated most of men’s health for the last two decades due to the development of the first phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor in the late 1990s. Many new additional medications have entered the market after this first in class medication and we compare these different agents along with the lifestyle changes that may improve men’s already present function.
Certainly readers anticipate articles on hypogonadism and hormone replacement in men as this topic has dominated the recent discussion of men’s health at both scientific meetings and in the popular press. We have multiple articles examining this theme from a variety of perspectives.
We would like to thank all the authors for their efforts in compiling their articles. Additionally, we would like to thank Dr. Tom Lue for both inviting us to be a part of this edition and agreeing to contribute an article. The journal’s editorial office was truly outstanding and we would like to acknowledge the many efforts of Lucine Gao and the rest of the staff at TAU. Our hope is that the readers find this to be an engaging and informative edition.
